Term 2
Working for Ward 2:
 
During his second term as Alderman for Ward 2, Gord Lowe has worked for his ward and the City.
 
Ward 2:
 
  • Inland Athletic Park is open.  There are now more soccer, rugby and baseball fields available in Ward 2.  A cricket pitch is available – introducing a new sports venue to Ward 2.

  •  The LRT extension is on target to open in 2008.  The interchange at Nose Hill Drive and Crowchild Trail will open in 2007.
  • Road widening along Country Hills Boulevard and Shagannapi Trail is underway.
  • The intersection of Sarcee Trail and Country Hills Boulevard is being modified to accommodate dual left turns in all directions.  Sarcee Trail will be widened north of Country Hills Boulevard.  A bridge over over Stoney Trail is under construction to improve access to Beacon Hill Shopping Centre and the Spy Hill Business Park.  This will ultimately become an interchange providing a connection between Sarcee Trail and Stoney Trail. 

  • Beacon Hill Shopping Centre is well underway with two major anchors (Costco and Home Depot) now open, with others to open shortly.
  • The school of Veterinary Medicine is under construction near Spy Hill.
  • The Spy Hill Business Park is underdevelopment.  Several business’ are now open.
  • A 126 acre business park located at 85th Street and 112 avenue has been approved.  Development, including planning for a Tri-Services (Police/Fire/EMS) Facility which may also offer other City Services from the same building to start immediately.  This should offer a significant employment and service opportunity for Ward 2 residents.
 
City Wide:
 
  • As Chair of the Standing Policy Committee, Finance and Corporate Services lead Council to develop and implement a multi year budget process which links business plans, performance measures and funding.  Calgary is the first major city in Canada, and one of  few in North America to move to longer term planning and budgeting based on Council led, integrated plans.    The financial reporting process developed won recognition from the Government Financial Officers Associations for its clarity and transparency.
  • As a member of the Standing Policy Committee, Land Use, Planning and Transportation ensured decisions affecting land use, planning and transportation met policy and the goals of the City.
  • As a member of the Calgary Planning Commission remained fully involved in the continuing evolution of the City Centre, the Belt Line, and other redeveloping areas in the City. Participated in the review and approval of new development in the suburbs focusing on sustainable, self contained communities with effective transportation connections to the rest of the City.
  • Council appointed member of the Board of Directors of ENMAX – ensuring the City’s perspective and interest is represented at the Board.
  • Council appointed member of the Board of AUMA (Alberta Urban Municipalies Association) – ensuring the City of Calgary position on municipal governance issues is represented.
  • One of two members of Council appointed to the Community Investment Fund steering committee charged with allocating rebated GST funds to the Calgary Zoo, Heritage Park, the Science Centre, Fort Calgary, and the Calgary Public Library to improve these City attractions. 
  • As a member of the Land and Asset Strategy Committee participated in the purchase and sale of City assets, ensuring the City received full value in every transaction.
  • Continued to be involved in the Cost of Growth and Financing Growth studies, and Enmax Legacy Park Fund to ensure orderly and affordable growth of the City and the provision of major new parks for the City.
